The first redback I ever found at my own place was living in the gap under the letterbox lid — exactly where you'd put your hand without thinking. That's the thing about spiders around here: it's rarely the ones on the wall you can see that matter, it's the ones tucked into the spots you reach into without looking.
If you live anywhere from Helensburgh to Nowra, spiders come with the territory. The mix of bush, water and warm summers suits them. You won't ever have a completely spider-free house — and you wouldn't want one, honestly, since they eat plenty of other pests — but you can absolutely keep the dangerous ones away from where your family actually lives.
Know the two you need to respect
Most spiders in your home are harmless and just look alarming. Two, though, are worth taking seriously in the Illawarra.
Redbacks love dry, sheltered, undisturbed spots. Under outdoor furniture, in the letterbox, behind pot plants, in the corners of the shed, inside that stack of old paint tins in the garage. They're not aggressive, but they're exactly where hands and bare feet go.
Funnel-webs are ground dwellers, and the Illawarra escarpment suburbs see plenty of them. They turn up in mulch beds, retaining walls and damp garden corners, especially through summer and after heavy rain — sometimes wandering into a laundry or garage that opens to the yard. These are the one to give real respect.
What actually helps
A few habits make your place a lot less inviting:
- Declutter the hiding spots. Spiders want undisturbed corners. Tidy the shed, lift firewood and stored junk off the ground, and clear out the dark forgotten piles in the garage.
- Knock down fresh webbing. A regular pass of the broom around eaves and corners keeps webbing spiders from settling in.
- Trim plants off the house. Branches and shrubs touching the walls are a direct bridge inside. Give them a haircut.
- Shake out shoes and gloves left in the garage or outside. It takes two seconds and it's a good habit in this part of the world.
Where the broom stops being enough
Tidying helps, but if spiders have already moved in — or you're finding redbacks and funnel-webs regularly — a treatment will sort it far faster and last far longer than anything you'll do by hand. The reason is simple: we treat the harbourage where they actually shelter and breed, not just the webs you happened to spot. A web knock-down looks good for a week; a proper treatment holds for months.
If you've got little kids crawling around the yard, or you're just tired of the redback roulette every time you open the letterbox, it's worth a call. We'll talk through what you're seeing and treat the spots that matter.
