Corrimal is really two places. The beach side at East Corrimal is sandy blocks, open yards and the kind of ant and garden-spider work you can mostly do from outside. Back over the highway towards the escarpment it's older brick and weatherboard under big trees, and that is cockroach, spider and roof-rat territory where the job is inside and under the house as much as around it.
The old roof voids up this end are also why we get the possum calls. We don't trap possums, but we do the part that matters after one has been in: finding the gap and shutting it so the rats that use the same hole are locked out with it.

Do you cover East Corrimal as well as Corrimal?
Both, and we treat them a bit differently. East Corrimal runs down to the beach, Corrimal sits back towards the highway, and the properties in each get a different set of problems.
- Down the beach end the yards are sandy and open, so ants and garden spiders are the usual call.
- Back from the beach it's older brick and weatherboard with big established gardens, and that's cockroach and spider country.
- Either way it's the same short drive for us — Corrimal is ten minutes up the highway from where we're based.
Can you remove a possum in East Corrimal?
Not the animal itself. Possum catch-and-release is a separate licence and it isn't our trade. What we do is work out how it got in and shut the roof behind it.
- Possums are protected in NSW, so trapping one and letting it go up the bush isn't legal — and it doesn't fix anything, because the hole stays open and the next one moves straight in.
- The method that works is a one-way door over the entry so the animal leaves on its own, then capping the fascia gap, the broken tile vents and the gable vents once it's out.
- Nine times out of ten the roof letting a possum in is already letting rats in through the smaller holes, and that part is ours — see possums in the roof and rodent control.
Is it a rat or a possum in the roof?
Listen to how it moves. A rat scurries — light, quick, up and down the same beam all night. A possum walks, and you get heavy thumps around dusk when it leaves and again in the small hours when it comes home.
- Droppings settle it. Possum scat is about the size of a small olive and often a bit fibrous with leaf. Rat droppings are grain-sized and there are hundreds of them.
- A possum usually leaves a urine stain on the ceiling because it uses one corner. A rat generally won't.
- Worth being sure before you spend money, because the two jobs are completely different.
